We are about to cycle across the southern states of the USA. This is the final leg of our bicycle journey around the world, and over the last few months people have been telling us how good the food is going to be in this part of the world. Food is a huge motivator to the cycle tourist and so we are pretty excited about what lies ahead.
Since we set out on this trip, we’ve had a ‘luxury pot’: a separate bank account where we keep a small amount of money, usually gifts, for treats along the way. It means we don’t feel guilty for splashing out on the odd meal out or cheap hotel (and we’d highly recommend the idea, as it has worked brilliantly). For this last stage of the journey, we’ve decided to spend what remains in our luxury pot on food, to make sure we are able to try as much as we can as we cross the southern USA.
This is where you come in…
What should we be eating?
We’ll be cycling from southern California, across Arizona and New Mexico to Texas. After a long stint through Texas, we’ll head through Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama before reaching Florida.
If you have any recommendations on the route, we’d love to hear from you. Whether it’s a burger or burrito; chowder or churros; grits or gumbo, tell us what we should be eating and where.
Along with the people, food is what makes a place most memorable. For this last leg of our journey, we want to make sure we don’t miss out on good eatin’. Please, help us in this greedy endeavour. Add your suggestions below.

I am going to be sooo jealous when you start posting pictures!! Havent been to South USA, but on the East coast the crab was amazing!…. and what also sticks in my mind was the triple baconator from Wendys!…. I think in the south you should definitely try anything BBQ’d… I think I just drooled on my keyboard.

Triple Baconator? Now that’s what I’m talking about, Nick!

In California, if you have a chance, go to In-N-Out. Ask for an Animal style Double with well done fries.
In New Mexico and Arizona, ask around for the best Mexican places. The locals know best.

Animal Style Double with Fries? This is getting even better. Will ask for local recommendations too. Cheers Josh.
