2010 Review – Best Adventures of 2010

I was going to write a list of my favourite expeditions and adventures from 2010 but have had so many suggestions from other people that I thought it would be churlish to just pick my own favourites and far better to include them all.

Thanks to everyone who contributed suggestions (too many to mention!)

Most Mentioned:

Ed Stafford walking the Amazon

Alastair Humphreys walking the M25

Mark Cooper running 50 marathons across Europe

Mark Beaumont cycling the Americas

Best Adventures 2010:

Mark Kalch walking across Iran

Alastair Humphreys crossing Iceland

Rob Cousins running to Annapurna base camp

Sticky Parkour’s 1000 miles of parkour

Jessica Watson sailing solo and unassisted around the world (youngest to do so)

Erden Eruc rowing solo across the Indian Ocean (first to row all three major oceans)

Vin Cox breaking the speed record for cycling around the world

Ripley Davenport walking unsupported across Mongolia

Richard Parks’ attempt to reach the seven summits and North and South Poles

Tim Emmet and Dave MacLeod climbing 5 new routes in 5 days in the Hebrides

Jordan Romero climbing Everest (youngest to do so)

Simon Evans and Fearghal O’Nuallain cycling around the world (first Irish circumnavigation)

Andrew Murray attempting to run 3000 miles from Scotland to the Sahara

Laura and I running the length of every Tube line in London (I’m allowed to say this because it wasn’t my idea)

(Dan Martin, insatiable as ever, also recommended the following: Penny Palfrey swimming 72 miles off Hawaii; Borge Ousland sailing the Northern Passage; Katie Spotz rowing across the atlantic; Jean Beliveau walking around the world for peace; and these cycle tourers on Twitter: Helen Lloyd, Pete Gost, Better Life Cycle and Cycling to the Ashes)

Your Best:

“Swimming between continents (crossing the Hellespont between Europe and Asia) and exploring my local river in Lancashire” – Laura

“Cycling the world on your bicycle” – World Cycle Vides

“I think our awesome island 2mile swim/camping one day epic is in with a shout!” – Dan Martin (with me, Laura and a few others)

“First Descents of white water rivers in Georgia?” – Lowri Davies

“Bath2London on Stand Up Paddleboards with Dave Cornthwaite; seakayaking training week in Menorca with Justine Curgenven; cycling back from giving a talk in York and not wanting to spend another wet night outside, so cycling 140 miles in one go with full panniers” – Sarah Outen

“Hitch hiking around the country with a £100 budget and cycling a rickshaw from Aviemore to London” – Me

…and you?

Add your own favourites from the year and any that I’ve missed in the comments below.

  1. Definitely agree with @petegost, who will be the first Englishman to be cycling across Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2011

  2. My best adventure in 2010
I finished end of July my “cycling around the world” trip, 61140 km in 2 years and 5 months. 2010 was one big highlight – cycling from Santiago de Chile to the Atlantik coast of Colombia.

  3. Dude – you haven’t put an HTML link in your £100 adventure. I bet loads of people would want to find out more!

  4. Congratulations Dorothee. And thanks for the recommendation @petegost!

My favourite has to be Andrew Murray attempting to run 3000 miles from Scotland to the Sahara and Alistair Humpreys walking the M25 (It looked like good fun!)

As for myself sailing twice across the Atlantic (the 2nd time part of a team of 2) having never been on a sailing boat before was definately a highlight. Who’d of thought typing “Adventure” into Gumtree would actually produce any worthwhile results!

Looking forward to the challenges and adventures of 2011!
