At 0640 hours this morning, we boarded an EasyJet flight bound for Iceland. Our hand luggage is camping kit and in the baggage hold lie 16 home-made ration daily ration packs.
After a day in Reykjavik gathering supplies and catching up on sleep after a 2am start, we’ll take a bus out into the mountains and start walking.
That’s it.
That’s as far as the plan goes because, like all good ones, it’s simple. We will be hiking the Laugavegur, a walking trail that’s world famous in Iceland. It’s about a 4 day walk (or 5-hour ultra marathon) but we’re hoping to extend it at both ends (on the Hellismannaleid and Fimmvorouhals routes, for anyone interested).
We’re back on Sunday 23rd, shortly before the deadline for my expedition grant. We’ll probably have one phone between us but don’t anticipate being able to send any updates from the mountains. Photos and pub tales upon our return!
P.S. Here’s a nice video of what walking in Iceland looks like (we hope)!
