Following in some sort of adventurer cliche, I am writing a book.
But, before you yawn too loudly, I should stress that it’s not about me!
It’s going to be called ‘How To Get To The North Pole’ or something similar and it will be a collection of guides for iconic adventures like rowing an ocean, crossing a desert or climbing an unclimbed mountain.
I’m writing it because over the years I’ve found it very hard to research these sorts of things. There are text books on the technicalities of sailing, endless magazines detailing the best kit for a bike trip, and dozens of websites about people on South Pole expeditions. But it takes a lot of time and effort to distill the relevant information and even then I frequently still find myself bewildered with questions still unanswered.
I also receive frequent emails asking for help getting to the North Pole, South Pole, up this mountain and across this desert. If I can put as much information about these things in one place then hopefully it will be a useful resource, if only to the niche few who undertake such endeavours or those that enjoy them from their armchairs.
Of course, I’ve never been to the North Pole or rowed the Pacific. But, I have helped other people do those things, spent a lot of time researching them for myself and, I think, have some experience of what sorts of things people want to know when preparing for such a trip.
I couldn’t tell a solid bit of sea-ice from a bit that’s going to crumble under your weight but I do at least know that the ability to “read the ice” is a crucial part of a North Pole expedition and I can point you in the right direction for getting experience.
That said, I’m not so arrogant or stupid as to suppose that I can work it all out on my own. I’m getting input from as many experience people as possible. There’s a list of chapters below. If you think you could help with any of them then I’d love to hear from you.
The book will be published next Spring by How To Books. I’m hoping to release individual chapters as ebooks too.
Likely Chapters…
- How To Get To The North Pole
- How To Sail The Seven Seas
- How To Cycle Around The World
- How To Cross A Desert
- How To Row An Ocean
- How To Get To The South Pole
- How To Climb An Unclimbed Mountain

Hi Tim, recently back from a walk across the Gobi, Mongolia. I’d love to help in anyway I can for the “How to cross a desert” bit.

Thanks Nalanda. I’ve just emailed you too.

Hi Tim, what about an additional chapter “How to get started”. This could be about how to overcome your daily office routines and start an adventure. For me this is currently the most tricky part :-)

I think I’ll stick to enlightening the mysteries behind big adventures for this book Markus but there’s plenty of motivational stuff elsewhere on the site!
