I note you use a MacBook Pro, but not iWeb. Is there a reason for this?
    Thanks

    Hi Taniya,

The photos are taken by Robert Hollingworth and feature his MacBook, not mine!

I actually use a Dell Mini 9 Netbook. A somewhat cheaper option.

Thanks for the primer. My family is planning a roadschooling year for our 9 year old to head out west along the Lewis & Clark trail in the fall of 2011. I plan to follow a lot of your advice. Can you recommend a program or software so that I can personalize a map with our route and timeline? I’d like to display something that looks like a color coded subway map with our planned stops that can be updated to show when we have arrived. I am NOT a programmer. Advice, please?

Hi Cindy, what a great opportunity for your child. I’m not a programmer either so hopefully we’ll be on the same wave length!

I think you’re talking about driving a long route. In which case I would recommend Google Maps which is wonderfully simple and easily allows you to plot routes along roads and make notes about the places you’ve been to.

If that’s too limited then download Google Earth. That has huge scope for customising and, for example, you could download tracks from your sat-nav to put onto it.

They’re both free. If you need something with more detailed maps then you could buy some electronic mapping software. Let me know if that’s what you’re after.

    Hi Tim
Thanks for sharing your expedition wisdom. What brand of sat phone do you carry?

Thanks Kamran. I rarely use them for my expeditions these days but have used a lot of Iridium and one Thuraya. I’ve written a comparison of them here: http://thenextchallenge.org/satellite-phones/
