The Next Challenge Grant is now open for adventures happening in 2024. Click here to apply.
What is The Next Challenge Grant?
The Next Challenge Grant funds people having adventures, big and small, anywhere in the world.
It is particularly aimed at those who have not done much or any of this sort of thing before, so if you’re reading this thinking “I’d love to do that but I don’t know where to start” then you are the target audience.
Awards are usually quite small (£100-200), so don’t apply if you want to go to the South Pole or climb Everest (they cost tens of thousands). But for anything a bit more affordable (say £5k or less), the door is open.
Previous winners have walked the Japanese coast and the Suffolk coast, and swum the Sardinian coast and Cumbrian coast. They’ve paddled in the Lake District and Ireland, Albania and Armenia. Walked with babies, five year olds and ponies. They’ve run across the Isle of Man, through Europe, along the Tien Shan, and around Great Britain. They have cycled to the UK’s best climbs, up the Tour de France’s best climbs, along Europe’s best known wall, and to the world’s best named lighthouse.
In short, they have come from all sorts of backgrounds, from all around the world, and done all manner of different things.
How does The Next Challenge Grant it work?
First, check the criteria. It doesn’t fund commercial trips or research projects, for example, but most other adventures qualify.
Second, fill out a short online form or, if you prefer, email a video of yourself to [email protected]. The deadline is 31st January.
There are typically around 10 winners, announced in March.
The only thing winners need to do in return is write a blog post and share some photos.
Who funds The Next Challenge Grant?
The Next Challenge Grant is funded by Tim Moss (who runs the grant), various other adventurers, and public donations.
It started in 2015 when Tim decided to give away the £200 he’d got from Google Ads on his website. Several other adventurer/bloggers chipped in with similar amounts, and a hundred more people made £2 donations.
£1,000-2,000 has been raised in this way every year since.
